Types of Acne and How to Treat Them

Updated: Aug 27, 2021

When it comes to skincare, we often focus too much on what’s the problem. Rather than thinking over why it happens and how to overcome them, we simply neglect the real factors involved. Skin problems such as acne might be common but still require enough attention. Avoid things from getting worse. Covering these skin issues is not a daunting task to do. For as long as you know how to differentiate a common breakout from one to another.

So, to keep things easier and more relatable, we have narrowed down the types of acne and how to solve these issues.

Whiteheads - these are common whitish blemishes that appear on the surface of the skin. This normally occurs when oil, dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria are trapped in your pores.

Solution : Have an alternate warm-cold face cleansing. This is to regulate the trapped particles in your pores and to encourage a healthy local flow. Exfoliating 2-3 times a week will also help detoxify your skin. Opt for gentle products that are non-comedogenic such as Matykos Beauty Black Mud and Green Tea Mask for complete rejuvenating treatment without harming your skin.

1. Blackheads- these are also considered comedones ( hair follicles that are clogged with oil and specks of dirt) just like whiteheads. They appear in tiny black spots which are caused by the exposure of the pores to oxygen.

Solution : The treatment for this skin issue is similar to whiteheads. Exfoliate and tone with non-comedogenic brands to avoid clogging of the pores. Extraction of these stubborn spots can be done as well by a skincare professional to ensure a proper and safe procedure.

2. Papules- This is a skin breakout beyond the whitehead stage. It often comes inflamed and infected which causes pain and sensitivity.

Solution : Focus on calming the affected area as much as possible and go for prescribed medication if necessary. Opt for a gentle cleansing option such as facial foam and moisturize your face with safe face masks such as hydrating / bubble masks. This gives a relaxing and cooling effect too.

3. Pustules- This is identical to papules but can be distinguished more by the reddish ring that surrounds it. And it comes as a whitish/yellowish blemish on the surface.

Solution : Never squeeze or pop it. And this condition is recommended to be checked with dermatologists since these are sensitive and need immediate attention.

Dealing with acne of any kind can be difficult and involves a roller-coaster of emotions. But one thing is sure, the earlier you seek advice/treatment, the better. And remember not to stress out. We aim for healthy skin, not a perfect one.
